Pink Streak in Hair Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink hair extensions part of month-long event at Florida Hospital Cancer Institute's Eden Spa

ORLANDO, Fla., Heads began turning today as a bright new hair accessory debuted in Orlando. Women began making quite a fashion statement with untraditional pink hair extensions for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For a minimum donation of $10 anytime during October, women will receive the unique hair accessory from Eden: The Spa for Image Discovery, a service of Florida Hospital Cancer Institute (FHCI).  The month-long event will benefit cancer patients and breast cancer research at FHCI.  Cancer survivors, women with family and friends impacted by cancer, and others supporting the cause have already taken part.

Cancer survivor Kathy Wright said her pink hair is a way to communicate with others.

"I'm just happy to have this little pink strip in my hair that says to everybody, 'Hey, I've had breast cancer.  I'm a survivor, and so can you be,'" Wright said.

The strand is easily placed along the scalp by Eden staff - the person can choose to have their strand placed right up front or more discreetly toward the back of her head - and since it is human hair, it can be styled regularly.  Florida Hospital has also approved employees to wear the pink strands to work during October.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer.  More than 180,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2008.

Eden: The Spa for Image Discovery is a service of Florida Hospital Cancer Institute and specializes in treating the aesthetic needs of cancer patients.  Each product and service at Eden has been carefully selected based upon quality and reviewed by healthcare experts at Florida Hospital.
