The High Risk Breast Cancer Screening Clinic is the only program of its kind in the Central Florida region designed to help women identify their genetic and environmental risk of acquiring Breast Cancer.

1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Florida Hospital Cancer Institute's High Risk Breast Cancer Screening Clinic ensures that patients at risk for breast cancer, due to genetic or non- genetic factors, have access to identify and reduce their risk of cancer. Staffed by Florida Hospital Cancer Institute specialists, including a nurse practitioner and genetic counselor, our goal is to evaluate cancer risks and recommend preventative treatments to those at high risk.

Breast cancer risk factors can include:

Genetic Factors - patients carry gene alterations that increases their risk of breast cancer

  • Multiple close relatives with cancer (three or more close relatives on the same side of the family)
  • Early age of cancer diagnosis (less than 50 years of age)
  • Multiple primary tumors in the same individual
  • Presence of bilateral and/or rare cancers
  • Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry

Non-Genetic Factors - patients do not carry known gene alterations but are at high risk because of other factors. Examples include

  • Age
  • Age of first menstrual period
  • Age at first live birth of a child
  • A prior breast biopsy
  • Family history of breast cancer even though the family does not carry an identifiable gene
