Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in the United States, with an estimated 182,460 new cases diagnosed in 2008. At the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, breast cancer was the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in 2008, with 821 analytic cases.Eighty-six percent of breast cancer patients are white, and 11% are African American. Over three quarters (78%) of the patients were diagnosed with low stage disease.
Patients aged 50-59 years represent the most frequently diagnosed age group of breast cancer cases at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute. Five percent of patients were under the age of 40 at diagnosis.
Treatment combinations received by breast cancer patients with Stage 0, I, or II disease at diagnosis are shown in these graphs. Surgery alone was the most common treatment for stage 0 disease, with one half (49%) of patients treated by this method. The majority of stage I and II patients received surgery in combination with chemotherapy, radiation, and/or hormonal therapy.
Five year observed survival is calculated by disease stage, and for breast cancer patients overall, for patients diagnosed from 1998-2002.
